AtarICQ is an ICQ clone for Atari's with a GEM frontend. The only other ICQ clone, that I know of, is mICQ but that is a CLI (command line interface), and that seem to have put a lot off people off, myself included.
The author's
The project is split in two different parts. First the GEM frontend, programmed by Joakim H”gberg. Secondly the overlay, the part responsible for communicating with the server, programmed by Dan Ackerman.
Can I try it?
In order to try it out you should have an Atari or compatible computer and a STIK compatible TCP stack, that means, STIK2, STING or GlueSTIK and last but not least, you must have an existing UIN (ICQ number). Something to remember is that the program is shareware, and both Dan and Joakim needs the money, so if you continue to use it REGISTER!
How does it work?
The first time you start it, you must fill in your UIN and password, if you don't have one, click on 'Create profile'. The next time you start it will connect automatically. After that you can 'Add contacts' through the menu, this is limited to 100 right now. If you don't know the UIN, do a search on the name or e-mail. If you left click on one of your contacts a window opens that allows you to write and send an 'Instant message'. If you right click instead, a popup will open that has four options: 'Send message', 'Send URL', 'Show info' and 'Remove contact'. Under the contacts list there are two buttons, the one on the left doesn't do anything right now, the one on the right becomes a drop-down menu when you click on it, where you can choose online status.
Sound
You can add sound in the form off AVR samples to some events: online, offline, receiving messages, receiving url, program start and end.
Conclusion
I think the program looks very promising, considering it is still early days, at the time of writing, 0.146. Just too let you know how good I think it is, I can tell you that I was the first person too register.
